Four monuments and two exciting events unite neighbors in the parks
In observance of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday on January 15, 2024, the Chicago Park District invites families to engage in events and visit local parks with incredible public art recognizing the legacy of the civil rights leader.
“The legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is deeply intertwined with the city of Chicago and the Park District,” said General Superintendent & CEO Rosa Escareño. “We invite all visitors to revere works of public art which commemorate the achievements and mission of the civil rights movement. It’s vital that the Park District is a venue for young people to experience the rich history of brave trailblazers whose influence helped shape Chicago.”
In celebration of his leadership, several park locations will be hosting events for teens. In addition, four monuments in Chicago parks pay homage to Civil Rights leaders throughout the 20th Century. The following are details on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day events:
Teen Blackout Bash, LeClaire Park, 5120 W. 44th St. | Saturday, January 13, 2024, 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Teens ages 13 to 18 are invited to groove, unite, and honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream together. Entry is free and features food, a dance off, and exciting games. Teens citywide are invited, though not required, to wear all black attire. Registration is not required.
Hoops in the Park, McKinley Park, 2210 W. Pershing Rd. |Monday, January 15, 2024, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Teens ages 11 to 17 are invited to compete in basketball games against their peers and first responders on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. After all, when school is out, the parks are in. Police and fire department staffers will go head-to-head against local teens. Pizza and prizes will also be available. This event is free to attend, however, pre-registration on the Park District website is required.
